GAM United are returning to the Mountain Premier League this summer, merging with fellow Denver club Top 97 Stars to create a unified contender for regional honors and deepen their impact on Colorado’s adult soccer landscape.

 

Roots in Colorado’s community game

 

Founded in 2014, GAM United began as a grassroots initiative to bring organized soccer opportunities to underserved communities in Colorado, growing into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on youth development, athletic excellence, and community engagement. Over the past decade the club has become a bridge between African and multicultural communities and the wider Colorado soccer scene, with men’s teams, youth programs, and camps that emphasize inclusion and opportunity.

 

From early league play and local tournaments, GAM United built a reputation as a hard‑working, technically gifted side that reflected Denver’s diverse neighborhoods on the field. Club president and CEO Nfansu Janneh, who played in The Gambia’s First Division and NCAA Division I before settling in Colorado in 2004, has consistently framed soccer as a tool for empowerment and unity.

 

“We started GAM United to give our communities a real seat at the table in Colorado soccer, not just a team to support but a pathway for young people to grow on and off the field,” said President/CEO Nfansu Janneh. “Coming back into the Mountain Premier League is the next step in that mission, because this league matches our ambition and our values.”

 

Early ties to the Mountain Premier League

 

GAM United were among the original clubs in the Mountain Premier League, helping launch one of the Rocky Mountain region’s first structured men’s pro‑am competitions. In those early seasons they lined up alongside FC Boulder, Colorado Springs FC, and FC Colorado, with each club owner sitting on the league’s Board of Directors as the MPL worked to build a sustainable platform at a reasonable cost.

 

Participation in the MPL gave GAM United access to higher‑level competition and a regional spotlight to showcase the talent emerging from their community programs. That experience also prepared the club for runs in state‑level events and USASA‑sanctioned competitions, where GAM United’s name became a regular presence representing Denver and Aurora on bigger stages.

 

Merger with Top 97 Stars

 

Ahead of the upcoming summer season, GAM United have agreed to merge with the Top 97 Stars, a Denver‑area side that has built its own following in local adult leagues and tournaments. The new, combined squad will compete under the GAM United banner in the Mountain Premier League, blending Stars’ player pool and competitive experience with GAM’s organizational structure and community footprint.

 

Club leaders describe the merger as a strategic move designed to strengthen depth, raise the competitive ceiling, and create a clearer pathway for players who aspire to reach national pro‑am platforms through the MPL’s growing network. By joining forces rather than competing separately, the two groups aim to present a single, cohesive team identity that can represent Denver at the top of the Mountain Premier Conference in the years ahead.

With home matches in past MPL seasons hosted at Denver’s Lowry Soccer Fields, GAM United have already seen how the league can attract local fans and families while maintaining a competitive edge on the field.
